Oscar’s Rundown

The Academy Awards ceremony celebrates the fine art that is a film. The awards, known as Oscars, are given to the best of the best in several categories from that year.

On February 26, 2017, the 89th Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. With the well-known talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, hosting the show, the Oscars already promised to be exciting. This was Kimmel’s first time hosting the Oscars.

Fans already were informed of the nominations before the show began. The fan-favorite movie La La Land, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, was nominated for 14 different Oscars, including Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Directing. This ties the movie with Titanic and All About Ere for the most Oscar nominations.Other popular movies, such as Moonlight, Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester by the Sea, and Hidden Figures, were also nominated for quite a few Oscars.

The show started out with Justin Timberlake performing his hit song, Can’t Stop the Feeling from the movie Trolls. Afterward, Kimmel gave an opening monolog. He cracked a few jokes to lighten the mood and even cracked jokes on Donald Trump.

Jimmy Kimmel set up the stage for the first presenter of the night, Alicia Vikander. The actress was to announce the winner for Best Supporting Actor. The nominations for this award include Mahershala Ali for Moonlight, Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water, Lucas hedges for Manchester by the Sea, Dev Patel for Lion, and Michael Shannon for Nocturnal Animals. She announced the first winner of the night Mahershala Ali in Moonlight. As he walked to the stage for his acceptance speech, he shook the hands of the other nominees. Once on stage, he thanked his teachers, the cast, and his wife with tears in his eyes.

The next presenters, Jason Bateman and Kate McKinnon came to the stage to introduce the award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Costume Design. Nominees for Makeup and Hair Styling include A Man Called One, Star Trek Beyond, and Suicide Squad. The nominees for Costume Design include Allied, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Florence Foster Jenkins, Jackie, and La La Land. The award for  Makeup and Hair Styling went to Suicide Squad while the award for Costume Design went to La La Land, landing their first Oscar of much more to come.

Next, the fierce cast of Hidden Figures strutted on stage. They presented a small speech before welcoming Katherine Johnson, an African American physicist who made large contributions to the space programs of NASA. She received a standing ovation and then thanked the audience.

Then, Dwayne Johnson came on stage to crack a few jokes before he presented his co-star and nominee of the Best Original Song, Auli’i Carvalho. Lin-Manuel Miranda performed a small rap before the song “How Far I’ll Go” started.

Jimmy Kimmel then introduced the president of the Acadamy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Cheryl Boone Isaacs. She gave a speech about the diversity and beauty of art and film.

Kimmel then came back on stage and delivered candy to the audience by dropping it from the ceiling. He then set up the stage for the next presenters

Kimmel then introduced one of the stars of Hacksaw Ridge, Vince Vaughn. Vince was to present the Governor Award, an award that is given to people for lifetime achievement and exceptional contributions to movies. This was the Academy’s 9th annual Governor Awards. He listed the previous winners of the award. After showing a video, they honored Lynn Stalmaster, Anne Coates, Jackie Chan, and even though he couldn’t be there, Frederick Wiseman.

Another video was then presented, honoring the past winners of the Best Supporting Actress Award. Last year’s winner for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Mark Rylance. Nominees for this award include Naomie Harris for Moonlight, Nicole Kidman for Lion, Viola Davis for Fences, Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures, and Michelle Williams for Manchester by the Sea. He announced the winner as Viola Davis. This was her first Oscar. She delivered a very emotional speech that moved everyone to tears.

Kimmel then got up and informed the crowd on a trick they were playing on a couple of people riding a tour bus around Hollywood. The bus was set to come to the theater, but they were going to think that they were entering an exhibit of dresses, but they were going to lead them into the theater to see all the celebrities.

Another segment was introduced where celebrities were going to share the people who inspired them. Jimmy shared the person who inspired him, David Letterman, and then went on to show a video of Charlize Theron, who spoke of being inspired by Shirley MacLaine. Then, both women came up on stage to present the next award, the Best Foreign Language Film. Shirley MacLaine received a standing ovation.

After a break, the people in the bus were about to come into the theater. Kimmel introduced the next presenters right before they came in. Hailee Steinfield and Gael García Bernal took the stage to present the award for Best Animated Short film.They also presented the award for Best Animated Feature Film.

Finally, the tour bus riders were taken into the room. The lights were dimmed and everyone was to yell Mahershala when they came in. The people were really excited and filmed most of the time. One of the riders introduced himself as Gary and his Vicki. They were engaged and Denzel Washington pretended to marry them. Kimmel introduced them to many stars, cracking jokes the whole time and allowing them to touch Mahershala’s Oscar. They were all then escorted out.

After a few more awards were given out, Kimmel sent a few tweets to Donald Trump.

Later, a special segment of Mean Tweets was shown, having Natalie Portman, Ryan Gosling, Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Chastain, Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Whoopi Goldberg, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Casey Affleck, Emma Stone, Miles Teller, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Bridges, and Robert Deniro reading mean tweets about them and reacting to them.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were next to take the stage to introduce the song from La La Land, nominated for Best Original Song, “City of Stars”, sung by John Legend.

Scarlett Johanson presented the award for Best Original Song. Nominees included “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” from La La Land, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls, “City of Stars” from La La Land, “The Empty Chair” from James Foley Story, and “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. The award went to “City of Stars” from La La Land.

Nicole Aniston was next to introduce a performance by Sara Bareilles who performed a song in memoriam of the fallen stars.

After a few more award, Brie Larson takes the stage to present the award for Best Actor. Nominations for this award included Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea, Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge, Ryan Gosling in La La Land, Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic, and Denzel Washington in Fences. The award went to Casey Affleck.

The next award, Best Actress, was presented by Leonardo DiCaprio. The nominations for this award included Isabelle Huppert in Elle, Ruth Negga in Loving, Natalie Portman in Jackie, and Emma Stone in La La Land. The Oscar went to Emma Stone, landing her her first Oscar.

Finally, the big moment was here, the moment to announce the winner for Best Picture. The presenters for this award were Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. When Warren opened the envelope, however, he paused and seemed confused. Faye, not knowing what he was pausing for, looked at the card and announced the winner as La La Land. The cast and crew of the movie rushed to the stage.

Moments later, the producer of La La Land, Jordan Horowitz, comes up to the mic to inform the crowd that there had been a mix-up. He tells the audience that Moonlight had actually won best picture and that the wrong card was read.

The crew of Moonlight then piled on stage and Warren came to the mic to explain what happened. The Academy has back up envelopes for each category. So instead of giving his the envelope for Best Picture, they mistakingly gave him the backup envelope of Best Actress. The card read Emma Stone, La La Land. When Faye saw the card, she read La La Land as the Best Picture.

Once the mix-up was sorted out, the cast of Moonlight gave their acceptance speeches and took home their prize.
