Leaves are changing colors, coats are coming out, and all the wonderful fall smells are in the air. Not only are all the new fashion statements coming out but all our favorite fall drinks are back. I have gone out to find which fall drink is the best.
First stop: Dunkin’ Donuts. With only two fall flavors available, I tried the Pumpkin Spice and the Salted Caramel. I ordered a hot and cold version of each. The first drink I tried was the Pumpkin Swirl Macchiato. It came with a tan foam layer on top and tasted more like espresso than pumpkin or spice. Also it had a fairly bitter taste to it and needed a few splendas. The second drink was the Iced Pumpkin Swirl Macchiato. The festive drink came in a clear cup to show off the two layers of coffee. The top layer was darker than the bottom layer, which were visibly different. This drink was much more bitter than the hot Pumpkin Macchiato, and again did not have a distinguishably pumpkin flavor.
The third and fourth drinks we tried at Dunkin’ donuts were Salted Caramel flavored. The hot Salted Caramel Macchiato came with a small layer of foam much like the Pumpkin Swirl Macch, however the Salted caramel had a much sweeter taste than the Pumpkin. Also the Salted Caramel Macchiato had a mocha flavor and not much of a caramel flavor. Although the drink did not have the prominent Salted Caramel taste, it was the best of the four drinks from Dunkin’. The last drink from Dunkin Doughnuts I tried was the Iced Salted Caramel Macchiato. Much like the Iced Pumpkin Spice, it came in two layers however the top layer was visibly darker than the one of. Consistent like the other drinks, the flavor did not come through clearly in the Iced Pumpkin Spice Macchiato. Overall Dunkin Donuts fall drinks lacked flavor and had adequate fall coffee drinks.
Second stop: Starbucks. With Starbucks being the iconic symbol for coffee and coffee related drinks, I could not pass up trying their fall drinks. The manager of Starbucks offered us two complimentary drinks for to try. The first fall drink was the Pumpkin Spiced Cappuccino. The Pumpkin Spiced drink was a peach color and had a sprinkle of cinnamon over the Pumpkin flavored whipped cream. Although the drink had more of a spice flavor than pumpkin flavor, the drink was very good. There was also a small vanilla flavor coming through with the pumpkin. The second drink I tried from Starbucks was the Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino. The drink was a light brown color and came with whipped topped with caramel drizzle and a sprinkle of salt crystals. The drink it self had a chocolate flavor to it and a hint of mocha but it lacked the caramel flavor. Starbucks fall drinks had an sufficient amount of flavor and were overall great seasonal drinks.
The ranking of the six drinks reviewed is:
- Pumpkin Spice Creme frappuccino (Starbucks)
- Hot Macchiato Salted Caramel latte (Dunkin’ donuts)
- Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino (Starbucks)
- Hot Macchiato Pumpkin Spice Latte
- Iced Macchiato Pumpkin spice
- Iced Macchiato Salted Caramel
Out of both places I went and all the drinks I tried the Pumpkin Spice Creme Frappachino was the best because it was the most flavorful and reminded me of fall.
