The month of March is MS awareness month. MS, which stands for Multiple Sclerosis, is a neurological disease.
Most people with the disease are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50. Over the years there has been different treatments of MS. Recently a pill has been approved that is just for MS treatment.
Around 2.5 million people have been diagnosed with MS around the world, 400,000 of which are in the United States. These numbers are estimated because the Center of Disease Control does not require U.S physicians to report new cases.
The causes of MS are unknown but it is known that the disease is not contagious or directly inherited. Over the years the life expectancy of MS patients has become longer due to new medical breakthroughs and more research.
The main fundraiser that raises money for MS is Walk MS. Every March, MS patients, along with friends and family, come together to raise money and awareness about MS.
MS awareness has grown a lot in the past few years and will continue to grow. Research is still growing and the treatments are improving along with the MS patients that continue to strive for a cure.
